Description
Rip Current Statement issued September 23 at 3:17AM EDT until September 24 at 8:00AM EDT by NWS Melbourne FL
* WHAT...Numerous strong, life-threatening rip currents expected
along with rough surf.
* WHERE...The beaches of Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, Saint
Lucie and Martin counties.
* WHEN...Through at least Friday night.
* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away
from shore into deeper water.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...In addition, gusty north to northeast winds
building down the coast today will produce rough surf and a
strong southward flowing longshore current along the beaches.
There is a high risk of rip currents. Swimmers are strongly
advised to stay out of the water until surf conditions improve.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and
signs.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
