Description
Rip Current Statement issued February 5 at 2:03AM EST until February 6 at 4:00AM EST by NWS Melbourne FL
* WHAT... Dangerous rip currents. Gusty east to southeast winds
around 20 mph will produce choppy, rough surf and breaking waves
of 5 to 6 feet.
* WHERE...All central Florida Atlantic beaches.
* WHEN...Through late tonight.
* IMPACTS...Rough surf will make swimming conditions hazardous.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore
into deeper water.
There is a high risk of rip currents.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and
signs.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
