UNESCO designates ancient Jericho ruins as World Heritage Site, sparking Israeli ire
The United Nations World Heritage Committee voted Sunday to list the Tell es-Sultan archaeological site in Jericho as a “World Heritage Site in Palestine.”

The decision was made at a conference held in Riyadh, UNESCO said on its official X account, formerly known as Twitter.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the decision, while Israel expressed ire.

This West Bank city used to be an oasis of calm. Not anymore
The newly designated site, located in Jericho in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, contains ruins dating back to the ninth millennium BCE. Jericho itself is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

The Palestinian Authority Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomed the decision, lauding it as an acknowledgment of Jericho’s “cultural, economic, and political significance” and a testament to “10,000 years of human development,” according to a statement published on Sunday.

PA Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Rula Ma’ayah underscored the significance of the decision, calling the site an integral and valuable part of diverse Palestinian heritage, according to a statement sent to CNN on Sunday.

“The outstanding universal value of the site qualifies it to be one of the World Heritage sites,” Ma’ayah said.

But the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its disapproval of the decision, saying it saw the action as “another sign of Palestinians’ cynical use of UNESCO and politicization of the organization.”

Located in the Jordan Valley, Jericho is situated between the Jordan River to the east and Jerusalem to the west.

In 2010, Jericho celebrated being the oldest walled city in the world, dating back to the modern Stone Age.

All 9 teens who escaped from a Pennsylvania juvenile detention center have been captured, state police say
CNN

All nine teenagers who escaped from a juvenile detention center in Pennsylvania following a riot at the facility Sunday evening have been captured, a state police official said Monday morning.

Four of the nine teen were captured about 2.5 miles away from Abraxas Academy in Morgantown, David Beohm, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police troop in Reading, said earlier Monday.

The juvenile facility is about 15 miles west of South Coventry Township, where escaped murder convict Danilo Cavalcante was captured on Wednesday after nearly two weeks on the run.
“We’re asking the people in this area again, kind of like we did two weeks ago, lock everything up, take your keys out of your car, be vigilant,” Beohm said as the search carried on overnight.
State and local law enforcement responded to Abraxas Academy and took “back control of the juvenile detention center,” the Caernarvon Township Police Department said in a statement.

From jailbreak to capture, what went right -- and wrong -- in the search for the escaped Pennsylvania inmate
All of the teens who escaped are between the ages of 15 to 17, officials said.

Police had said they would approach the teens as if they were armed and advised the public to do the same.

The nearby Twin Valley School District had announced it would be closed Monday “out of an abundance of caution.”

The teens managed to escape by overpowering two prison employees, Beohm said.

“So they were able to get the keys and then they were able to get out the side door, or one of the doors,” Beohm added.
